King Arthur Baking Cinnamon Bun Mix
My family loves when I make cinnamon rolls, especially during the winter holidays. The recipe that I've used came from an article in RealSimple magazine published the September 2018 Make It Yourself column. That was at the start of my baking journey.
The original recipe is no longer online. A version of it appeared in the August 2022 edition which doesn't match the one I use. Based on the comments there are some differences in ingredient amounts. I have not tried the August 2022 version for myself.
My goal in this bake is to determine if this shortcut yields the same fluffy delicious cinnamon rolls my family enjoys. Reviewing the recipes there are a few differences:
- The mix includes sour cream
- The mix does not include butter in the filling
- The mix does not include cream cheese in the icing but does include melted butter
- The mix makes 9 rolls vs. 12 rolls in the 2018 recipe
After making the mix, I think what I miss the most is the butter in the filling! If I were to use the mix again, I would definitely add it. My guess is that the tang from sour cream in the batter is a "substitute" for the cream cheese that is not in icing.
The rolls were good. However, I think I'll stick with my favorite recipe, the September 2018 version of the RealSimple recipe for now.
